China National Day celebrates the forming the Central People’s Government on October 1 every year. The Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunar calendar. The ancient Chinese observed that the movement of the moon had a close relationship with changes of the seasons and agricultural production. To express their thanks to the moon and celebrate the harvest, they offered a sacrifice to the moon on autumn days. Our apartment complex had an event where we got to learn to make mooncakes and lanterns, traditional elements of the Mid-Autumn Festival.
