To conclude a promotional event at a medical center where we got to learn about and sample practices of Traditional Chinese Medicine (can you say free massage and cupping?!), we went on a walking tour of Nantou Ancient City last Saturday morning. This is the largest heritage site in Shenzhen with about 1730 years of history. The well-preserved buildings include the Dongguan Assembly Hall (built 1868), Kwan Tai Temple (god of war, fraternity, and justice), and Wen Tianxiang Ancestral Hall. This historical spot is one of so many of the ancient places intertwined with the modern, as you see selfie sticks floating down the cobblestone roads older than the US. We enjoyed breaking our everyday modernity to take a step back in time and begin to scratch the surface exploring the more traditional China. Some characteristics still remain at Nantou in the style of a Cantonese town, evidently giving the feel of some areas of Hong Kong in the 1960s. We hope to travel to Hong Kong in the next couple of weeks to compare for ourselves – and beyond – as we venture deeper into China and deeper into history.
